The Dwarf With An Axe

I wrote a Children's book last week. Which I'm very excited about, I've been wanting to Illustrate a Children's book for years now, but I just wasn't coming up with any Ideas.
Then last week I had struck upon some inspiration and I wrote a 25–26 Illustration story.

The Story has Three Protagonists, and this is one of them. I drew quite a few iterations of "The Dwarf" until I finally got the look I wanted. It was just a little sketch, trying to figure out what he should look like, so he's a little expressionless and, I'm not exactly sure what he's doing.

I've been exploring different ways of Coloring my drawings, trying to figure out how to get "the look" that I imagine in my head onto the screen. This isn't exactly it—but it's a lot closer than my previous attempts.

(I know the image and composition are kind of dull, I was just working out what the character should look like)

I Tried Something Different

I wasn't particularly happy with the colored piece from yesterday. I plugged in my Wacom and tried a different technique. It's still not exactly what I was going for, but it is closer to what I envisioned.

When I drew him, his skin was green in my head. When I colored him yesterday, I used a plugin that helps create the Flats and it randomly assigns colors to different fill areas, and the blue that it picked for the area of his head was appealing to me, so I left him Blue yesterday—and I went with green today.

I Drew this little Guy Yesterday

Then I Colored him today, It's not exactly what I wanted, but I was happy that I found a way to color the lines.

Porkchop in Progress

I decided to color my drawing of Porkchop. It's up late because I had a work opportunity. This is an in progress image, I plan to refine it further and post either as I go, or when I finish.

Lovecraftian Nightmare

I had this dream the other night. I was in an open air marketplace, like something out of Casablanca. On a fruit and/or vegetable stand there was what appeared to be a human head in a plastic bag. The plastic, of course, obscured the details.  I held up the bag, and ripped a hole in it to get a better look and it immediately came to life.

The eyes opened and it began to scream. It forced its way out of the bag. Now that it was out of the bag I could see that the face looked like the bottom of a cockroach and a face at the same time. The "dreadlocks" of the face, and the curled up "legs" of the cockroach were actually writhing tentacles. As this horrific creature screamed, another face would form in the mouth and then come out of the mouth a fully formed identical monster, which would then begin to scream and duplicate itself in the same manner.

It was filling the street fast, and for some reason there was a carnival style midway, It had one of those games where you shoot the scary clown in the mouth with a water gun and attempt to inflate a balloon past capacity. I picked up one of the water guns and sprayed one of the Tentacled, Cockroach Monsters in the mouth. This had a two-fold effect.

First, the thing stopped screaming. Then it actually merged with one of the creatures that had spewed forth from its mouth.

Soon, the exponentially massive cockroach/face monster was back down to a single ugly mug—the dream ended shortly after.

This is my attempt to capture the essence of the hideous creature.

Porkchop

I once had a small water turtle. He was a daredevil (or had bad eyesight), he would jump off of anything into a bucket of water. We called him Porkchop. I don't think I got the head to body ratio correct, but I like the way this one turned out.

Corporate Shenanigans

Recently at work they had a meeting about an emergency preparedness fair that they were planning. My understanding is that they were discussing how to promote said fair, and someone offhandedly stated in disgust—are we really going to stick more things to the bathroom doors?! Someone suggested a flier, someone else suggested something a little different, someone else mentioned that Richard does cartooning, and thus an assignment was born. This is what I came up with.

I must add that trying to make emergency preparedness funny is no easy task. Every Idea that I came up with was—not politically correct. Even this one. Think about it. A freak show? You just can't do that kind of funny anymore. But they distributed this to everyone in the company yesterday, on a flier of my design, with all the pertinent detail located on the back in official company colors.

The type is a little small on screen, but it works in person..

Chibis in Marker on Grid Paper

I've been admiring the artwork of Ian Mcconville of Three Panel Soul formerly of Mac Hall lately (Not always pg-13—exercise caution). So I was doodling Chibis at work while my computer was occupied rendering video. Here we have Pocahontas, Mr. Squishy and Moo.

Gunslinger Squish as Desktop

Mr. Squishy as a Gunslinger. I've been reading about Deadlands and felt like drawing a cowboy Squish.

Mr. Squishy that I drew for a G.U.R.P.S. Supers campaign that I'll be playing soon. This Squishy is not a strictly canon version—well... he is if you understand my macro-story for Squish.

As for a Character Description—I started writing and what came out was a transcript of answers, given in an interview type situation, as follows.

—————————————————————————————————————————————

My name? Well... I don't know my real name. Most folks just call me Mr. Squishy. Squish for short.

Don't ask, I know the question—it's always the same—I don't know where I came from, I don't even know what I am.

I have some memories that feel like they're from another era, always just out of reach—like a dream that's fading away.

Look, I don't know why you want to interview me, I'm no hero—I only hang around these guys because they don't treat me like the freak of nature that I am.

I like Candlelight Dinners and Long Walks on the Beach—no not really.
I like to see what I'm eating, and if you think you have sand everywhere after visiting the beach...

Well look at me, no one even knows what I'm made of—I've been probed and prodded and studied a LOT—I've exhibited properties of non-Newtonian fluids, complex fluids, Herschel-Bulkley fluids, and Bingham plastics just to name a few, but they still don't have any Idea what I am.

Did you know I'm this same stuff all throughout my body? Yeah, no internal organs—no heart, no liver, not even a brain! How do I even function! Even these clothes appear to be part of me, or at least made of the same stuff I am. I mean, I'm fully functional underneath, they do come off, it's not like I'm sitting here in the buff.

I swear though, it's enough to give one a complex.

Uhh—I'm pretty good with electronics, though I prefer things that are more mechanical.
I like swing music and Zoot suits—maybe I lived in the 20's who knows, I certainly don't.

No, no, no, no, no, NO—I will NOT talk about the toaster incident—this interview is over..

Exactly

Another random doodle, what's his story? I don't know. Maybe someone asked him if he wanted to play Savage Worlds and he said, "Exactly."

This guy ended up looking like a hobbit to me.
