Corporate Shenanigans

Recently at work they had a meeting about an emergency preparedness fair that they were planning. My understanding is that they were discussing how to promote said fair, and someone offhandedly stated in disgust—are we really going to stick more things to the bathroom doors?! Someone suggested a flier, someone else suggested something a little different, someone else mentioned that Richard does cartooning, and thus an assignment was born. This is what I came up with. 


I must add that trying to make emergency preparedness funny is no easy task. Every Idea that I came up with was—not politically correct. Even this one. Think about it. A freak show? You just can't do that kind of funny anymore. But they distributed this to everyone in the company yesterday, on a flier of my design, with all the pertinent detail located on the back in official company colors.


The type is a little small on screen, but it works in person..

I've been admiring the artwork of Ian Mcconville of Three Panel Soul formerly of Mac Hall lately (Not always pg-13—exercise caution). So I was doodling Chibis at work while my computer was occupied rendering video. Here we have Pocahontas, Mr. Squishy and Moo.

Gunslinger Squish as Desktop

Mr. Squishy as a Gunslinger. I've been reading about Deadlands and felt like drawing a cowboy Squish.

Mr. Squishy that I drew for a G.U.R.P.S. Supers campaign that I'll be playing soon. This Squishy is not a strictly canon version—well... he is if you understand my macro-story for Squish.

As for a Character Description—I started writing and what came out was a transcript of answers, given in an interview type situation, as follows.

My name? Well... I don't know my real name. Most folks just call me Mr. Squishy. Squish for short.

Don't ask, I know the question—it's always the same—I don't know where I came from, I don't even know what I am.

I have some memories that feel like they're from another era, always just out of reach—like a dream that's fading away.

Look, I don't know why you want to interview me, I'm no hero—I only hang around these guys because they don't treat me like the freak of nature that I am.

I like Candlelight Dinners and Long Walks on the Beach—no not really.
I like to see what I'm eating, and if you think you have sand everywhere after visiting the beach...

Well look at me, no one even knows what I'm made of—I've been probed and prodded and studied a LOT—I've exhibited properties of non-Newtonian fluids, complex fluids, Herschel-Bulkley fluids, and Bingham plastics just to name a few, but they still don't have any Idea what I am.

Did you know I'm this same stuff all throughout my body? Yeah, no internal organs—no heart, no liver, not even a brain! How do I even function! Even these clothes appear to be part of me, or at least made of the same stuff I am. I mean, I'm fully functional underneath, they do come off, it's not like I'm sitting here in the buff.

I swear though, it's enough to give one a complex.

Uhh—I'm pretty good with electronics, though I prefer things that are more mechanical.
I like swing music and Zoot suits—maybe I lived in the 20's who knows, I certainly don't.

No, no, no, no, no, NO—I will NOT talk about the toaster incident—this interview is over..

Fly Me to the Moon

I work for a transit company, so obviously I had to draw a Flying Bus. Also, I like drawing stylized moons. 

You may notice that this image is Drawn in pen, whereas most of the other pictures are pencil. 

For years I drew almost exclusively with Pencil and then would Ink the Final outcome. Then For Years I decided I liked drawing with just the pen. Then one day I picked up a pencil again and remembered how nice it is to be able to erase and refine the line a little more. 

Currently I mostly draw in pencil and use the computer to turn the pencils into the Inks. This gives a nice solid black image, with the character of the original drawing still intact. Inking a drawing tends to sterilize (and can numb the mind as well)—killing the life originally captured. 

Interestingly enough, this is this very method that gives certain classic Disney movies that look I absolutely love. Ub Iwerks is the genius behind Disney using Xerox to take Pencils directly to Ink. 

Sleeping Beauty was lavishly produced, and it shows—it's a gorgeous film, but commercially it didn't do well. Money was tight at the studio and using the newly invented Xerox technology allowed movies to be produced at a lower cost. Without it, Disney would not have had the Budget to keep making Commercially Viable Films. It also Gave 101 Dalmatians, The Sword in the Stone, The Jungle Book, Aristocats, Robin Hood, & The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh that Wonderful, Sketchy, Organic Feel. 

(I think The Tigger Movie, Piglet's BIG Movie, and the animated Short John Henry used a Computerized, Scanner Based Version of the same Method to keep that same Natural, Raw, Living look)

Greetings Traveler

Sometimes I start drawing and then I don't know what to do with my hands. You may have noticed that I have a couple gestures that repeat themselves over and over. This is one area in which I really need to expand my horizons as an artist. One thing I miss about being at School, is the way that it continually pushed me to be a better artist, sometimes I feel like I'm really stagnant.

Cornered

I'm not terribly happy with this one. The Perspective is wrong, my foreshortening is not quite right—especially on the sword. Yeah, that's a sword he's holding. I remember having this cool Idea in my head when I started this one, but it fell apart the more I drew. I don't even remember what the cool Idea was. Oh Well.

Pidoh-pidoh & Doug

There is a children's book in this one, I'm still working on the story—alright, this is the extent of the story, but I was thinking of writing a children's book when I drew it.
